What is the rule of thirds? How can you tell if you are doing it correctly? What does using the rule of thirds do to an image? Why is it important?

For Today’s warm up, we’ll be looking at photographer Nicolas Bouvier’s Silhouettes, a technique where photographers make people look like shadows.

How does Bouvier use Rule of Thirds in these images? How do these images make you feel? How does rule of thirds add to those feelings? What do you think about these photos and why?

For your first assignment, you will choose a subject and take two pictures of that subject. The photos will look the same, except for the fact that one will be blurry and the other will be in sharp focus.

Look at the photos above, notice that the one on the left you can clearly see the eye in sharp focus. The image on the right is blurry.

You can use the zoom on the camera to zoom in on your subject to verify that it is actually in focus.

Make sure the images are the same. You must have one of the images blurry. If the photo is blurry you cannot fix a blurry photo in lightroom or photoshop. You’ll need to take the photo again with the correct focus.

TOMORROW: We’ll learn how to set up a tripod and get the details for the focus assignment.

The video explains how to use focus for Video, but it’s the same for Still Photography as well. After viewing the video below, answer the following questions using complete sentences.
